A kitchen cabinet layout is a set of numbers before it is a style. The doors close or they hit each other. A person of a given height reaches the second shelf or reaches a stool instead. The stock pot fits the drawer or it lives on the floor of a base cabinet for the next fifteen years. None of that is decided by the door profile or the finish, and none of it shows up in the rendering handed across a showroom desk.

Why the approach suits older housing stock
Homes around Yakima make the case on their own. The third is volumetric, and it is the one most often skipped. Cabinet sizes should be chosen against a written count of what the kitchen holds, item by item, before any box is ordered. Valley households that put up produce in season own canners and roasters that a standard base cabinet was never sized for.

Planning Storage Around What a Kitchen Actually Holds

Cabinet orders are usually built from a wall elevation. Someone fills a 12 foot run with boxes that look balanced, and the contents get sorted out on move in day. Reversing that order produces a better kitchen for the same money. Write down what the household owns, then buy boxes sized to hold it.
Do the count first
The inventory takes an afternoon and it is done with a tape measure, not from memory. Record the pots by diameter and height, lids included. Count plates, bowls and glasses by stack height. Measure the small appliances that live on the counter and the ones that live in a cupboard, because a 16 inch stand mixer and a 14 inch air fryer each dictate an opening. List the sheet pans, boards and cooling racks by longest dimension. Note the bulk goods, which for a Yakima household in season often means a case of jars, a canner and a dehydrator, none of which fit a shelf designed for cereal boxes.
Drawers or doors in the base run
A 24 inch deep base cabinet with doors and one fixed shelf has roughly 21 inches of interior depth. The front 12 inches get used. The rear 9 hold whatever was pushed back there in year one, and retrieving it means kneeling on the floor with a flashlight. The same box built as three drawers presents its entire depth at standing height every time it opens.
That is the whole argument, and it holds nearly everywhere. Doors still earn their place under a sink, where plumbing occupies the volume, and in front of a pull out waste unit. Sizes then follow the count. A three drawer bank typically runs a 6 inch top for utensils and two at 12. A pot bank wants a 6 inch top and two deep boxes of 10 to 12 inches. Check the tallest stock pot against interior clearance rather than the drawer face: a 12 inch pot needs about 13 inches of clear space once the drawer bottom and runner hardware are subtracted, which usually means specifying a 15 inch front.
Matching width to contents
Widths come in 3 inch increments and each holds a different set of things. A half sheet pan is 18 by 26 inches and needs about 19 inches of clear interior width to lie flat, which a 21 inch box gives and an 18 inch box does not. A 30 inch drawer takes two rows of plates side by side with pegs between them. A 15 inch drawer suits spices, wraps and foil and suits nothing stacked, because the contents shift each time it opens.
Pantry depth and the vanishing zone
Pantries get specified deep because depth reads as capacity. It is not. On a 24 inch shelf the front 12 to 14 inches are visible and reachable. Past 16 inches an item sits behind another item, invisible from a standing position, and stays there until it expires.
Two fixes work. Shallow shelves of 11 to 14 inches, in a wider or taller cabinet, keep every jar in one visible row. Or keep the 24 inch depth and fit roll out trays, which bring the rear volume forward to the standing position. What does not work is a fixed 24 inch shelf, however efficient it looks on the elevation.
The corner
Every L or U shaped plan produces at least one base corner, and there are only a few honest ways to handle it. A rotating carousel of 28 to 32 inches diameter uses most of the volume and suits pots and mixing bowls rather than small items that slide off the edge. A blind corner pull out brings the far section out into the room at a premium price but presents everything at standing height. A corner drawer bank cut at 45 degrees is the most usable of the three and eats the most width on both legs.
The fourth option is to accept the loss. Filling the corner with a dead panel and using the frontage for two full depth drawer banks meeting at a filler surrenders perhaps 6 cubic feet of awkward volume and buys simplicity plus reliable hardware. In a small kitchen that trade is usually wrong. In a larger plan with a pantry elsewhere it is often right, and it is settled against the inventory count.
Upper Cabinet Height and What People Can Actually Reach

Vertical planning gets far less attention than the floor plan and decides more about daily use. A wall cabinet is a stack of shelves at fixed elevations above the floor. Whether those elevations sit inside the arm span of the people living there has a numerical answer, and the answer is usually no for the top third of the run.
Starting from the counter
The base box stands 34.5 inches tall, toe kick included. Add a 1.5 inch stone or a 1.25 inch solid surface and the finished work surface lands at 35.75 to 36 inches above the floor. That figure is the datum for everything above it, so a floor out of level by half an inch across a long wall moves the whole vertical stack with it.
Above the counter, the conventional gap to the underside of the wall cabinets is 18 inches, putting the cabinet bottom at 54 inches. Compressing that gap to 15 inches buys three inches of cabinet but leaves a stand mixer with its bowl raised, a tall blender jar and a gallon jug with nowhere to stand. Opening it to 20 or 21 inches reads as generous, clears the sightline across the counter, and takes its three inches off the top of the cabinet where the loss hurts least.
Where the shelves actually land
Inside a 30 inch wall cabinet with its bottom at 54 inches, the fixed bottom is the first storage plane, the first adjustable shelf sits near 66 inches and the second near 77. A 36 inch box adds a plane around 84 inches. A 42 inch box tops out at 96, level with an eight foot ceiling, with its highest shelf at roughly 88 inches.
Shelf spacing should be set against contents rather than divided evenly. Dinner plates stacked twelve deep want 11 to 12 inches of clear height. Cereal boxes and tall tumblers want 13 to 14. Everyday mugs need 7 to 8, which is why an evenly thirded cabinet wastes four inches per opening. Cabinet sides are drilled on a 32 millimeter grid, so spacing tunes in roughly 1.25 inch steps at no cost.
The reach envelope
Comfortable overhead reach, meaning a full dish comes down without rising onto the toes, runs to about 15 inches above eye level. In practice a person of 5 feet 2 inches retrieves from a plane at roughly 68 to 71 inches. At 5 feet 6 inches the ceiling of comfortable use is 73 to 75 inches. At 5 feet 10 inches it is near 78 to 80.
Set those figures against the shelf elevations above and the arithmetic is blunt. In a standard 30 inch cabinet the shorter user reaches the fixed bottom and the first shelf, then stops. The second shelf at 77 inches is already a stool shelf for anyone under about 5 feet 8. Everything above 80 inches is retrieved with a step, every time, by everybody.
Why the top shelf is dead storage
That top plane is not worthless, it is just not kitchen storage. It holds the roaster, the punch bowl, the canning jars waiting for August in the Yakima Valley and the platters used twice a year. The design mistake is counting it as capacity. A plan that answers a storage shortfall by specifying 42 inch uppers has not added usable space, it has added a place for things bound for the basement anyway, at full cabinet cost.
Crown detail versus usable shelf
Under a standard eight foot ceiling there are 96 inches to divide, and the cabinet run, the crown and the reveal all draw on the same account. A 30 inch box topping at 84 inches leaves 12 inches for a substantial stacked crown with breathing space above it. A 36 inch box tops at 90 and leaves 6, enough for a modest two piece crown run tight to the ceiling. A 42 inch box tops at 96 and leaves nothing, so either the crown does not happen or the cabinet drops and the backsplash gap shrinks.
Make the trade deliberately. The 36 inch box with a 6 inch crown converts an unreachable shelf into visual weight at the ceiling. The 42 inch box buys a plane at 88 inches that a household visits a few times a year.
Working Clearances and the Space Between Cabinets

Almost every complaint about a remodeled kitchen traces back to a distance somebody shortened by four inches. The cabinets are fine. The finish is fine. The dishwasher door lands against the island, or two people cannot pass behind the range. These are clearance failures, and they are decided on paper months before anything is installed.
Aisle width for one cook and for two
A single cook working a galley or a run opposite an island wants 42 inches of clear floor between the opposing cabinet faces. That is measured from finished front to finished front, so counter overhang and door thickness are already in it. At 42 inches one person can stand at an open base cabinet and still turn without contact.
When two people cook together, or one cooks while a second loads the dishwasher, the number rises to 48 inches. Those extra six inches are exactly the width of a person edging past. Below 40 inches a second body cannot get through while a drawer is open, and the kitchen becomes a single occupancy room no matter how large the floor plan.
The hard floor is 36 inches, and it belongs to a passage that carries traffic but no work, such as the leg of an L running to a back door. Many Yakima bungalows have exactly that condition, where 36 inches is honest and 42 is not available without moving a wall.
Appliance doors project further than people expect
A standard dishwasher door drops to horizontal and reaches 24 to 26 inches out from the cabinet face. That is only half the requirement. Somebody has to stand beyond the open door and lean over it to load the lower rack, which needs another 21 inches of body space. Added together, a dishwasher wants 45 to 48 inches of clear floor during use.
A 30 inch range door swings out 22 to 24 inches, but the user is pulling a hot, heavy sheet pan across it, so the working position sits further back. Allow 42 inches minimum and treat 48 as the target where the oven faces an island.
Landing space beside the heat and beside the cold
Every appliance needs a place to put things down. Beside a cooktop, plan 15 inches of uninterrupted counter on one side and 12 on the other. In a peninsula or island, extend that to 15 inches on both sides, because there is no wall to stop a pan handle. A cooktop set within 3 inches of a tall cabinet has no landing at all on that side, and the pan gets set on the burner grate next door.
The refrigerator wants 15 inches of counter on its handle side, or directly across an aisle no wider than 48 inches. A refrigerator at the end of a run with a wall on the handle side is a two trip appliance for the rest of its life.
Corners, where doors and drawers meet
Two runs meeting at 90 degrees create a conflict that is invisible in plan view. A door hinged on the corner side swings across the face of the adjoining cabinet and its knob strikes the neighbor's drawer front. A drawer pulled out in one run blocks the door in the other. The remedy is a filler strip of 2 to 3 inches at the inside corner, which pushes both boxes far enough apart that hardware clears hardware. Where a drawer bank sits on one leg, 3 inches is the safe number, and skipping it is the commonest source of a scarred cabinet face in the first year.
Islands set too close
Clearance mistakes concentrate at the island, because it is the one element that can move a few inches at the drawing stage and never again. Set 42 inches to the perimeter run on any side with no appliances, 48 inches on the side facing a dishwasher, range or refrigerator, and check the seating side separately. A 36 inch high counter with a 15 inch knee overhang wants 24 inches of width per stool and 32 to 36 inches behind the stool for someone to walk past a seated person. An island measured at 42 inches to the cooking run and seating three on the far side usually hides a 30 inch pinch point somewhere, and that pinch point is what the household feels every day.
